about

We wrote this song off the back of Tylas lead guitar part and then Lewis was experimenting with some cool drum parts, Lewis and Pete are big fans of Phil Collins/Toto and when we got to the studio it had to have that chorus sound on the bass to keep it true to the people we were influenced by. The song was so experimental and I think I was getting big Into The Who and Elbow at the time so the middle 8 was a straight up nod to The Who and the melody was elbow kinda style. The lyrics are very trippy and I wrote them whilst I was looking after birds for my parents (I'm not really a fan of birds I've always had a little fear of them). There was three birds, two of them white and they were like lovers and the third bird was a black and grey bird and I often watched them and he just wanted to be involved and loved. There was this white cat and he kept on standing outside the cage and for three months looking after them I managed to keep that bloody cat away until the day my parents returned and let them out and my favourite one, the black and grey one got taken away by the cat. The lyrics for me were about identity and what we're born to do and the search for acceptance and love. I can honestly say I wasn't on drugs but I wish I was so explaining this song didn't show me for how mental I am. I've always had a little fear of birds but I've always liked the way they sing to communicate and survive and I guess that black and grey bird was just like me singing to communicate, to survive and wanting to be loved by everyone. Bloody cats
